I think I've found termites in my house! What do I do?

The first thing to do is DON’T TOUCH OR INVESTIGATE THE DAMAGE. Sometimes disturbing the termites will only cause them to go elsewhere. Don’t spray or try and kill them with your own pesticides that you get from the shop. This may kill the ones you can see, but most of the time it won’t stop where they are coming in from.

Secondly, call us STRAIGHT AWAY to come and assess the problem. We treat termite problems very seriously and will endeavour to be there in under 24 hours. Not that termites will cause much extra damage in that time, but more so for your peace of mind when trying to sleep at night.

What if I’ve found termites in the yard of my property?

Statistics in Australia are that one in every 4 properties have termites living on them. It’s quite common to find termites in the yard when we conduct our timber pest inspections. That said, finding termites close to the house (within 50 meters) does increase the risk of termites eventually finding your house.

If you find termites on your property its recommended to get a professional out to do a termite inspection. We check all throughout the house to ensure they haven’t entered into it yet, and then around the property for any other termite activity. After we’ve conducted our thorough check we can then give you our professional opinion on what should be done about it.

Timber pest inspection

When we come out we will firstly conduct what’s called a timber pest inspection. In this thorough inspection we will be able to determine what species of termite we are dealing with, which is quite important. Where/ how they are getting in, where they may be coming from, eg, a termite nest outside. And importantly we will provide you will a range of options to deal with the problem.

After our initial assessment we are happy to spend as much time as needed to explain the situation to you and give you a range of treatment options. It’s entirely up to you if you want something done then and there or if you want to think about it for a few days. Treatment options can range from only a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand for a full termite treated zone installed to the house.

1 in 4 properties have termites

A lot of people get that sinking feeling in their stomach when they first come across to what seems to be termites, eating away at their house. Thoughts of your prized possession about to collapse in a heap and the bill to fix the damage can really increase ones anxiety levels.

Though this can at times be the case, most of the time its not as serious as thought to be. In fact, it’s estimated that 1 in 4 properties have termites on them. (mainly found in the yard)

Termites

How do you treat for termites?

There’s a few different ways we can protect your house from termite attack. Our preferred method is by installing a termite treated zone. This is where we treat the soil where the house is in contact with the ground (either treating all posts or around the perimeter of the slab) so termites are not able to get to the house.

It’s important to note that we mainly only use a non-repellent termiticide. These termiticides are very different to the termiticide you buy from the shops which are mainly only repellents. What this means is that termites are able to sense that there’s a poison there and will just find another way into the house.

Where with our termiticides they aren’t able to detect that where they are trying to get into has been treated, therefore killing them before they are able to get into the house.

Termite facts and information

As much as we dislike termites, they play an important part in the worlds ecosystem. Considered to be natures garbage compactors, a termites main role is to consume rotting and dead trees. Unfortunately, us humans have decided to make most of our houses out of dead timber. Therefore, when termites get into your home, they are just doing what they are made to do. There are several species of termites that are found in Australia. It’s important for us to identify what species they are as some are super aggressive and can consume a wall in a matter of weeks, where others will mainly only cause cosmetic damage to the timber.

Termites are quite blind, living most of their lives in the nest and in termite shelter tubes. One way we determine if the timber damage is caused by termites is to look for these termite shelter tubes. Termites build these tubes for a few reasons, firstly to keep in moisture, as termites can only live in highly humid environments, and secondly to protect them from ants. Ants are one of the main predators of termites. Termites also tend to be forages, meaning they will start eating timber in one area of the house, but at the same time will be searching for other pieces of timber to consume. They can stop feeding at one area to feed at another area but can return whenever they feel like it. This can make our job of finding the entry point difficult at times.

Below are some of the most common questions we receive from our customers

We provide a 12 month warranty for cockroaches, ants and spiders for residential places, and guarantee our work for commercial sites until the next service is due. We only offer a 1-month warranty for fleas and rodents. This is because fleas can be re-introduced quite easily, and the control of rodents will only last as long as there is bait in the bait stations we leave. That said, we generally use enough bait that will last a residential property 6 months in normal conditions.

Regarding timber pest inspections,we can’t offer any warranty, as termites could potentially turn up at your property a month after we have done our inspection. If we install a termite treated zone to your house, we will endeavour to offer a warranty where possible. This is done on a case-by-case basis andwill let you know beforehand what we can and can’t offer.

A warranty means we will come back, free of charge, to retreat the problem area. We can’t guarantee that after our treatment you won’t see a single pest throughout the warranty period, its normal to see the odd pest around, but if you have persistent problems, we encourage you to call us back. It’s all part of the service that we offer.

The chemicals we use are designed to kill the intended pest we are treating for. At the end of the day they are chemicals, and there are certain precautions that have to be followed when using them. But they are designed to have the least impact/ effect on humans, and pets, while being the most effective against the pest we are treating. Without getting too technical, a lot of the pesticides we use are designed to only work on pestsand are fairly harmless to humans. For example, one of the termiticides we use kills termites by hardening their exoskeleton, which prevents them from malting to their next stage. This chemical is harmless to humans and pets because we don’t have an exoskeleton.

If you have any concerns about anything we are using, please don’t hesitate to ask. We are more than happy to explain exactly what we are using and where.

The large majority of the pesticides we use are reasonably odourless. Most of them you can barely smell, and once dry won’t be noticeable.

The pesticides we use are mixed with water and then sprayed on the intended surface. The active ingredient in these pesticides then bonds and adheres to the surface. One application of wiping or mopping the surface that’s been sprayed wont straight away take off the active ingredient. Continuous mopping will eventually take off the active ingredient over time. The same goes with rain. Once we spray the external of a house, the active ingredient is bonded to the walls of the building. As long as it gets a chance to dry, rain will not wash off the chemical. You may even wash your external walls down with a garden hoses and still be fine. Though a high-pressure hose would sufficiently take off the active ingredient.

The pesticides we use are designed to effectively kill only the intended insects. Most of the chemicals we use are reasonably harmless to pets. Birds and particularly fish are most susceptible to our pesticides. We take appropriate caution regarding birds and fish. Before we conduct any treatments, we will ask you if there are any pets and will advise of what needs to be done in each case. If you have dogs or cats we generally recommend putting their food and water bowls away, and mainly for dogs, help keep them away while we are spraying.

Gone are the days when you had to empty your cupboards out before the pest controller turned up. We do ask that you take in any washing, so we can spray the washing line, cover any fish ponds, turn over/ bring in any outside pet bowls, and help keep dogs away while we are treating. If we are spraying for spiders outside, we do ask that all doors and windows be kept close so none of the spray wafts into your house.
